Uganda today joins the rest of the world to observe the world diabetes day. The day is an international event marked on every 14th of November to raise awareness about diabetes.
This year’s theme is ‘Eyes on diabetes’ and the event is being held at Jinja play grounds in Jinja district. There will be free screening of diabetes and education today and throughout the week in hospitals in Jinja as part of the activities.
The National Non-communicable disease study estimate prevalence of diabetes at 1.3 percent translating to over 500,000 Ugandans living with the disease.
Globally 415 million people were estimated to be living with diabetes in 2015 with a number expected to rise to 640 million by 2040.
The health minister, Dr Ruth Acheng says, the government has allocated shs2 billion to procure medicine for diabetes to be distributed in the health facilities across the country. She urged the public to regularly exercise and reduce intake of sugary foods.
