Nestled on the serene shores of Kalangala Island, Uganda, the Victoria Forest Resort Hotel stands as a testament to the potential of sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurship. Overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Victoria, this resort has not only grown into a beloved holiday destination but also played a pivotal role in preserving the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Pearl of Africa.
Founded in 2011 as the Ssese Palm Beach, the resort has evolved from a modest site with substandard cottages into a world-class destination. By 2018, after extensive renovations, the Victoria Forest Resort emerged as a beacon of luxury and relaxation. With its 50 stylish rooms, a sprawling beach bar, wellness centers, and the infamous white sand beaches that set it apart from other local spots, it has become a hub for both local and international visitors.
A Vision Realized
The brainchild of Ugandan businessman Christopher Kamukama, the resort sits on 40 acres of land and reflects his vision of providing an authentic yet luxurious getaway. Kamukama, an astute entrepreneur, has been at the forefront of making the resort a key player in Uganda’s tourism industry. His daughter, Atwiine Kamukama, the resort’s General Manager, has brought fresh energy to the operations, overseeing its rise with poise and insight.
Having lived and worked in Kenya for six years, Atwiine has a wealth of experience managing tourism facilities, including a stint as Assistant Reservations Manager at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. She credits much of her success to the lessons learned in Kenya, which has a more developed tourism industry compared to Uganda. Yet, she sees immense potential for Uganda’s tourism sector to catch up with global standards. “Uganda still has a long way to go in terms of development. We need more innovators and leaders who can push the tourism industry forward,” she shares.
Under Atwiine’s leadership, Victoria Forest Resort has seen an 85% room occupancy rate, attracting guests from countries such as Turkey, the United States, and beyond. The resort’s services cater to international standards, with a menu that blends local and global cuisines, making it a favorite for foreign tourists. Furthermore, it has been recognized internationally, ranking at 45.5% on the scale of five-star resorts.
Eco-Tourism and Sustainability at Its Core
What sets Victoria Forest Resort apart is its seamless integration with nature. Surrounded by dense forests and the tranquil waters of Lake Victoria, the resort is an oasis of calm, offering visitors the perfect escape from city life. The sound of birds chirping, gentle waves lapping against the shore, and the refreshing breeze all contribute to the resort’s unique appeal.
The commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of the resort, from its eco-friendly building designs to its use of local resources and commitment to the community. The resort has created employment for many locals in Kalangala, and a large portion of the products used in its operations are sourced from nearby villages. This approach not only boosts the local economy but also fosters a deeper connection between the resort and the surrounding community.
“The resort has preserved the natural beauty of the area while bringing in much-needed revenue,” explains Mr. Tyson Kangwagye, the resort’s Head of Finance. The resort’s white sandy beaches, a rarity in the region, add to its allure and make it a prime destination for weddings, corporate retreats, and family vacations.
Growing and Innovating
As the resort continues to grow, it has become a go-to venue for corporate events, conferences, and weddings. Its conference facilities can accommodate over 5,000 people, making it a hub for both leisure and business tourism. The resort’s management team is constantly innovating, with future plans to expand its offerings, including more wellness services like spas and massages, and enhanced eco-tourism experiences like bird watching and nature trails.
In addition to its business success, Victoria Forest Resort has actively engaged in corporate social responsibility initiatives. They regularly partner with the local Kalangala Town Council for environmental cleanup campaigns and have contributed to local sports activities.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Despite its successes, the resort still faces challenges, primarily related to infrastructure. “Road networks in the islands are a major concern,” says Atwiine. Although the resort offers convenient transport services via the MV Nodl, which ferries guests to and from the mainland, the condition of roads on the island remains an issue. Additionally, waste management is another challenge that needs urgent attention.
Nevertheless, the future of Victoria Forest Resort looks bright. As Atwiine continues her studies in Business Administration in Switzerland, she remains committed to building on the resort’s success and contributing to Uganda’s growing tourism sector. With its focus on eco-tourism, luxury service, and community development, Victoria Forest Resort is more than just a hotel—it is a model for sustainable tourism in Uganda and the greater African region.
As it continues to attract both local and international visitors, the resort stands as a proud ambassador for Uganda’s tourism industry, forever anchored in the beauty of Kalangala Island’s culture and nature.
