St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) are the 2019 U-20 schools rugby Champions after defeating defending and record champions Namilyango College 14-00 at the Legends Rugby grounds in Kampala.
After almost two months of competition, it was down to the two giants as the final served an age old rivalry between the country’s top rugby schools with both teams winning 13 titles amongst them.
However, it was SMACK who showed the intent of winning early on as the Ngonians were abit out of par to their opponents. Fly half Calvin Musoke got his team under way with two well taken penalties as SMACK raced into a 6-0 lead at half time.
However, it was a different story after the restart as Namilyango pushed abit harder to get back into the game but again Musoke was on hand to pick his spot between the posts as SMACK extended their lead to 9-0.
A lapse in the Ngonians defensive set up allowed the pacey Musoke space to run into before finding his captain Ahumuza Chekie to score the only try of the game as SMACK rounded off the game with a 14-00 score.
Namilyango missed the chance of extending their dominance over the competition after winning the previous two years. SMACk on the other hand picked up their third trophy with their last triumph coming in 2016 at Namilyango’s back yard.
Musoke was voted the Man of The Match after a scintillating performance for SMACK while Ahumuza was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading his team to five victories on the way to the title.
However, it was not gloom for Namilyango as they won the U-15 final beating SMACK as well as the U-17 trophy defeating Kings College Buddo.
