Uganda Premier League Champions, Vipers will hope to get their CAF Champions League campaign off to a good start when they play Sudanese side Al Merreikh in Khartoum on Wednesday.
The Venoms represent Uganda by virtue of winning the 2017/18 league. The team arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday.
Speaking ahead of their first leg encounter, Vipers head coach Javier Martinez Espinoza said he is confident that his team can get a positive result which they need before the second leg.
“We go into this game seeking a good result away in Khartoum,” said Martinez. “It is important that we won our last league game therefore we go into this game with our spirits high. The players are in good shape and ready to fight for a positive result
Goal keeper Fabian Mutombola who got injured during the international break did not travel with the squad. Former KCCA midfielder Tom Masiko, forward Davis Kasirye, left back Aggrey Maddoi and right back Fred Okotall did not make the squad.
Daniel Mzee Sserunkuuma, the club’s top marks man will be at the fore front of getting the result with Duncan Sseninde and Moses Waiswa will be the creators-in-chief for the Venoms. Halid Lwaliwa will be looked at for his experience at the back.
This meeting represents the third time these clubs are meeting with both games ending in draws. Al Merreikh’s last meeting with a Ugandan side was a 2-0 loss to KCCA.
Algerian referee Aberazzak Arab will handle the match, assisted by Abbes Akram Zerhouniis and Brahim El Hamiaou Sid Ali. Mustafa Ghorbal is the fourth official.
Vipers have never progressed beyond the preliminary qualification round.
