Record Uganda Premier League champions, Sports Club Villa has appointed Douglas Bamweyana as head coach.
The announcement confirms the resignation of former head coach Moses Basena, who threw in the towel last week after the 2-2 draw against Tooro United in Fort Portal.
SC Villa former player Basena took over the coaching reigns in June but quit his role after failing to win a single game during his eight games in charge.
Bamweyana, previously worked at Proline FC and has had two spells at Express FC, with the last being at the start of the 2017/18 season. He won thrice, drew once and lost four of the eight games in charge.
Though largely inexperienced in top flight football, Bamweyana holds a CAF A coaching license, FA level 2 football coaching license from Leichestershire in UK and was the head of Makerere University Sports Science Department as well as being head coach of the University’s football team.
“The interim committee would like to inform the football fraternity that due to the poor results the club have been posting in the recent past, The Club and the head Coach Mr Moses Basena have decided to terminate the latter’s contract by mutual consent. The club would like to appreciate Mr Basena efforts in putting the club back on its feet,” read part of the statement.
The statement also confirmed that Anthony Weramaka will replace Jjagwe Haruna as the new treasurer on the committee while Sarah Adong has been confirmed as the new Public Relations Officer.
There were rumours indicating that Sam Timbe was expected to come in as technical director with Simon Mugerwa expected to be named as head of youth development.
Club legend Nestroy Kizito, who was assistant to Basena and was in charge of the team recently will stay as the club’s assistant coach.
Bamweyana will be tasked with lifting the club out of the relegation zone as well as getting the club’s season started as they are still the only club without a win this season, drawing four and losing four of their eight league games.
He kicks off his reign with a friendly match on Wednesday against Spartan FC at the Bible School, Luboowa.
Villa currently lie 14th on the 16-team table.
