1- Arsenal 2 Liverpool 0 (1989)
Arsenal pulled off a miracle performance in the final league game of their 1988-89 season. Just a win wouldn’t have been sufficient for the Gunners, because they needed to score two more goals than title rivals Liverpool to win the league title. It was a golden opportunity for Arsenal who hadn’t won the title in 18 long years.
Both sides failed to create any clear-cut chances in the first half, but Arsenal succeeded in breaking the deadlock very early after the interval. Alan Smith managed to head home the indirect free kick from Winterburn. In response, Liverpool squandered the two chances that fell to Aldridge and Ray Houghton. That cost them the league title as Michael Thomas raced into the penalty area and got the ball past the advancing keeper to score the second goal.
2- Arsenal 1 United 0 (2002)
Having already secured the FA Cup, Arsenal went to Old Trafford to register a historic double. Their task was doubly challenging because they were playing without Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Thierry Henry, and Tony Adams. Therefore, it was a huge credit to the Gunners when they snatched victory against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and sealed their name on the Premier League title.
Manchester United looked to be in the ascendency in the first half as they launched many attacks but Arsenal defended stoutly to deny them any goal. Arsenal finally started testing United’s rearguard after the break. The Gunners broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Sylvain Wiltord fired home the rebound of Freddie Ljunberg’s strike. Sir Alex Ferguson introduced Van Nistelrooy soon but even he couldn’t change the scoreline. With this victory, Arsenal also registered the Premier League title.
3- Arsenal 4 Everton 0 (1998)
Arsenal was very close to winning their first title of the Premier League era in the spring of 1998. They only needed a victory from their remaining 3 matches to lift the coveted trophy. The Gunners got that victory in emphatic style when Everton came to Highbury.
Arsenal was gifted the opener when SlavenBilic inadvertently put the ball into his own net. Overmars inflicted the second blow with a brilliant solo effort in the 28th minute of the game. The Gunners were completely dominating proceedings by that time as Viera, Wreh, and Parlour came close to scoring. In the 57th minute, Overmars struck a spectacular goal to put the game beyond Everton. This was followed by Tony Adams’ sensational goal to complete the rout.
