The identity of the 12 players who will travel to England to represent the country at the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England has been revealed by the Uganda Netball federation.
Over 37 players were called for the initial training in January with the number trimmed to 13 last month.
The squad was scheduled to be announced earlier but was hit with turmoil as the technical team was left divided on who to make the final squad between the experienced Rachael Nanyonga and Irene Eyaru.
However, the verdict has finally been settled with Nanyonga the preferred choice over Eyaru. Eyaru will remain part of the team as a reserve player who can come in in case of injury.
Shaffie Nalwanja and Martha Soigi join Eyaru as the other players who will remain part of the team as reserve players.
The team is dominated by locally based players, but National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and Prisons do form the bulk of the team.
Australian based Peace Proscovia aka ‘Warid Tower’ and England based Mary Nuba Cholkoh will lead the team that also has 2015 World Cup squad stars such as Ruth Meeme (center), Lilian Ajio (wing defender), Stella Oyella (goal attacker) and Sylvia Nanyonga (wing defender)
Jesca Achan, Betty Kizza, Sylivia Nanyonga, Joan Nampugu, Stella Nanfuka, Muhaimuna Namuwaya are all in line of making their World Cup debuts.
Subsequently, coach Vincent Kiwanuka has been confirmed to take charge of the team as head coach and will be assisted by Nelson Bogere. Imelda Nyongesa will also join the technical team in a new role as the top Director of coaches.
This year it’s slated for July 12-21 at M&S Bank in Liverpool, England.
