Uganda’s female sprinter Jacent Nyamahunge has won the country another double gold at this year’s Special Olympics games in Abu Dhabi.
Nyamahunge, a student at Uganda Christian University won the country its third gold medal after clinching victory in the women 200 metres race at the Dubai Police Stadium on Saturday night beating Japanese Mayak Kimura and Jahannah Mogale of South Africa by 24 and 28 seconds respectively.
The 21-year-old, made history by winning her second double gold medal at the games after claiming the women 100 meters earlier. Nyamahunge also won double gold in the 100 and 200 metres at the 2015 special Olympics in Texas, USA.
After the race, she credited her coach Bashir Ssekandi for her latest achievement saying, “It was good work from the coach. I always have trouble getting off the blocks but obviously today was really good.”
Elsewhere, 16-year-old Larry Feni picked up team Uganda’s first silver medal after finishing second behind Ecuador’s Miguel Parraga in the men’s 50 meter free stlye. While Hassan Zirakulabe blew his chance of another medal after he was penalized following a false start in the 25 meters dash.
At ADNEC Sports Complex in Abu Dhabi, the unified volleyball team’s Cinderella story is yet to be interrupted. Two victories on the bounce against hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE), 2-1 and Serbia, 2-0 have put them in clear sight of a medal.
Special Olympics are the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event which focuses on the empowerment of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport. Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Over 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries compete in a series of sports, as well as a variety of initiatives and activities.
