Thanks to ranger Steven who called to say, ”Come quickly, there’s a giraffe about to have a calf ! ”
Of course we raced over, just in the nick of time as she started bearing down and minutes later we had a new baby

One always thinks that the calves fall from a great height, but actually they come out in stages with their heads almost touching the ground before they slide right out.

Really not as brutal as it looks…. and over in an instant. While the other giraffe doesn’t even notice what’s going on!

Mom checking on junior…. she seemed not to stir for absolute ages, but maybe the long grass blocked our full view….

First sighting of the little tot…not so little really as they are SIX feet tall at birth !

Not just the long legs that need to be got control over…that long neck all over the place

Mom cleaning her tot

…and then she start encouraging junior to get up…..

A number of false starts…shame

Tengenena…Omwana ayimilidde…

Up for a few seconds and then…. Ooops

Whoopsiedaisy !….gets down again…

That loose neck again….

Nearly….nearly…….

Harder than it looks, trying to get her neck to cooperate… Poor thing

And we’re up…properly ! Check the concentration !!

Steady…steady….

So much love……

Hold up Junior…not cleaned behind your ears yet….

Off to explore my world…

An hour later and and the little one has her first drink…great success !
