The new leader of opposition Betty Aol Achan has officially started work at parliament after parliament this morning introduced her to the floor.

Aol delivered her acceptance speech amid cheers from ruling party MPs, prompting a member to ask why the NRM side was in jubilant mood.

Mr Okoth Oboth asked the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah who was chairing the Wednesday session if its right for only one side (NRM) to be happy about the appointment of the new leader of opposition yet the opposition side is not happy.

Ms Achan is the fifth leader of opposition since 2006.  She thanked the outgoing leader of opposition Kasese Woman MP Winnie Kizza for the great leadership she showed during her two years at LoP.

Ms Kiiza has been a popular LoP within parliament and on the streets of Uganda, however, the leadership of FDC did not disapprove of her, saying she was loyal to former party leader Gen Mugisha Muntu. There is a general belief that Gen Muntu, Winnie Kiiza, Abdu Katuntu and others are planning to register another political party.

The leadership of FDC under its president Patrick Amuriat announced changes, demanding Kiiza hands over office immediately. She was accused of insubordination. Kiiza responded saying she will not leave office until she receives official communication which the party did not have the courtesy to communicate to her.

Achan was welcomed by the deputy speaker Jacob Oulayah who chaired the Wednesday plenary.

The new LoP thanked God for giving her the opportunity to serve as the leader of opposition in this country

NRM chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa thanked the former leader of opposition Winnie Kizza for the great work she did for the opposition to win elections in various places and asked the new LOP to always keep the smile as she serves her people.

Aol called for dialogue saying that everyone has something to offer. “Team up with me in this office in the service of the people through constructive opposition through our constitution”, she said.
