Following severe turmoil that rocked Uganda in the 70s and early 1980s, a young Yoweri Kaguta Museveni joined revolutionary movements to liberate the country from bad leadership.
The turmoil that was mainly characterized by bloodshed and displacements of people from their homes, was mainly caused by government soldiers who were involved in tribal squabbles.
This conviction has led to an end to the vicious cycle of vengeance and hatred that ruined the country.
Thanks to his spirited leadership, today people from different tribes, religions and political allegiances, even foreigners co-exist in harmony.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Armed Forces has over the last 35 years dedicated his energy to building a united armed force that will enhance national unity while promoting security, a key element in the struggle for social-economic development.
The President is an advocate of Pan Africanism. He has urged the UPDF to embrace Pan Africanism, which distinguishes them from the past traditional tribal and colonial armies.
According to him, unlike the traditional tribal and the post-colonial army that mainly served the interests of the ruling royal class and entrenched foreign economic exploitation, a liberation army such as UPDF should always promote and safeguard the rights and interests of the masses. He argues that it was divisions, in tribal armies which weakened them thus failing to defend their societies against colonialists.
Gen Museveni shuns identities of tribe, religion and sectarianism that were practiced by past armies, because to him it is through the unity of Africans that the safety and future of the African continent can be guaranteed, and it’s people shielded from future neo-colonialism, domination and marginalization.
This therefore, explains Gen Museveni’s philosophy of a pro-people army that supports the principals of Patriotism, Pan Africanism, Socio-economic transformation and Democracy, the four pillars of the NRM party.
