OP-ED: Will government’s Wealth Creation reduce poverty or its an early campaign to 2021 elections?

By Lydiah Namayengo

I have observed the President of Uganda move around this country with his crowds in what he termed as the #M7WealthCreationTour that has later turned into rallies for his campaigns and endorsement for 2021 elections.

And I keep asking myself whether he is creating wealth or actually has already began his 2021 general elections campaign?

Wealth may mean abundance of valuable financial assets or physical possessions that can be converted into transactions. So how does the President organizing a rally of people under a tent, give them transport refund of 300,000/= create wealth?

Does the refund become a financial asset for wealth creation or capital?
Isn’t that just a rally to hold campaigns in preparation for 2021 general election?

Wealth can also mean an individual possessing a substantial networth. So how does parading people one day for five to six hours and lecture them about Museveni for Life and how u fought wars translate into individuals getting substantial networth?

So how worth have the people who assembled in Kigezi region? How worth are the people who assembled at kololo and all these other regions? His has government invested in its people interns of professional skills to have some worth??!

Or wasn’t that all about an assembly of people on a rally for campaigning for 2021 election?

If the President’s tour is about wealth creation, why do we see him signing posters and endorsements for various paid people paraded to attend in different regions?

What and where is the connection between wealth creation and endorsement for 2021 Presidential Sole Candidature? Are Ugandans that foolish not to realize that this man is already in campaign???

Where is the Electoral Commission that always claims to be independent and non partisan and regulates all aspirants not to engage in any political campaigns or activities before nomination?

Why do they issue regulations to control other political parties and forces of change but can not regulate the President?! Isn’t that becoming partisan? Are they now serving the current regime in power? Or do they also perceive a campaign rally to mean creation of wealth?

According to the United Nations, inclusive wealth is a monetary measure that includes the sum of natural, human, and physical assets. Natural capital includes land, forests, energy resources like oil and gas, and minerals. So how does a two hour’s presidential appearance on a campaign rally to listen to his bush war lectures translate into natural, human and physical assets that lead to wealth creation??!

Wealth creation should have investment and prioritization of human capital as its cornerstone both in planning, budgeting and implementation. Human capital is about the population’s education and skills and no country all over the world can become wealthy without investing in its population in regards to education and skills.

In the 2019/2020 financial year budget plus all the previous 32 budgets, we have not seen the NRM government prioritize skilling, education and people’s investment but rather prioritize their stay in power while the citizens either have to attend the poorly facilitated poor quality education, the education that has a job mismatch or others keeping their children at home because they can not either access the poor long distance schools or are too poor to even afford a school uniform for their kids to out on while at school!

So why doesn’t government use the over one billion shillings that President spends on his fore team, convoy, fuel, travels, team and transport refund to all the people they have transported as well as transporting all these people to invest it in establishing industries, purchase of machines, agro processing equipment, value addition as well as restructuring the education system to match the job market if President is really into wealth creation??!!

Or is he actually using the Wealth creation tour to actually hold campaign rallies & bribe citizens or voters with the 300, 000/= to vote for him in 2021 general election as well as mobilise people in their community to do so?!!

Wealth creation may involve making money, saving the money and then investing the money in physical assets or capital like machinery, buildings, and infrastructure.

So can the President’s appearance on a rally for one hour translate into people saving and investing in physical assets?!! Or its just lieibg to Ugandans that u are creating wealth yet you are campaigning for 2021??!!

If the President cares about wealth creation like he claims, how many industries, processing initiatives, machines, hands on equipment were put in the 2019/2020 financial year budget plus other 32 budgets for the last 32 years in power that go through cabinet have been prioritized and funded to reduce on poverty, unemployment and achieve wealth creation??!!

Fellow Ugandans especially the young people and women, let’s wake up and Say No to the continues lies and wastage of tax payer’s money in the name of wealth creation tours.!

These guys are campaigning for their next election and as usual, they win an election and start planning for the next election.

Like they said before, that they are NOT OUR SERVANTS, so they don’t work for us but are working for their children and grand children, they therefore can not think about us creating wealth but rather their stay in power!!!
