In a recent turn of events, Speaker Anita Among has firmly stated that Roko Construction Company must explain how it has spent the money it received. This demand came after the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, pushed for transparency during a visit meant to check on Roko’s operations.
However, things got rocky when Roko refused to let the opposition team into their headquarters. Ssenyonyi remarked, “When someone hides, it raises suspicion about what they are concealing.”
He pointed out that the government has invested a lot in Roko, especially for important projects like the Parliament chambers and the Inspectorate of Government House, both of which are still not finished. “We don’t mind helping Roko,” Speaker Among added, “but we want to see exactly how this money has been used. The Auditor General and the Ministry of Finance must give the public answers.”
This situation has led to calls for an investigation into whether Roko’s employees are getting paid on time, as there are growing worries about the company’s finances. Ssenyonyi stressed the need to find out if workers are receiving their wages promptly.
Minister Musaazi questioned the need for the Leader of the Opposition’s visit to Roko’s headquarters, saying, “We must understand the purpose of these checks. Oversight should ensure everything is done correctly with government contracts, but we need to know what specific issues are being raised.”
As the discussion about accountability and transparency continues, the opposition stands firm in its demand for clearer information about government spending in the construction industry, especially concerning Roko.
Everyone is waiting to see what happens next, as the calls for accountability grow louder. As the saying goes, “Truth will out,” and it seems the public is eager for answers.
