Buvuma – In a scene straight out of a comedy of errors, Nkata Health Centre III on Nkata Island, Buvuma District, is falling apart before it has even opened its doors. The UGX 600 million hospital, which was supposed to be a beacon of hope for islanders, is already cracking at the seams, with the ceiling starting to rot as rainwater seeps in. It seems like the roof couldn’t hold water, literally!
Residents of Nkata are not laughing, though. They are demanding the government hold the contractor responsible for the shoddy job. The hospital, located in Lyabaana sub-county, is just one of many projects left hanging by a thread, and the locals are tired of it. After all, why buy a cow when you can’t even get the milk?
Buvuma District Chairman Adrian Dungu confirmed the mess. “We know about the hospital’s condition, and that’s why it hasn’t been opened yet,” he said. Dungu added that this contractor has a history of botched jobs, mentioning hospitals in Lubya and Lukale that are in similarly poor condition. It’s like the contractor has a magic touch and everything he builds turns to dust!
Dungu reassured the residents that the district is pushing the contractor to return and make repairs before the hospital can be commissioned. Let’s hope they get it right this time, or the islanders might end up with a building that’s as useful as a bicycle to a fish!
