Archbishop Raphael P’mony Wokorach of the Gulu Archdiocese has urged Christians to avoid polygamy, emphasizing that the practice is one of the major causes of family breakdowns. Speaking during a thanksgiving mass, the Archbishop called upon believers to commit to monogamous marriages for the stability and strength of their families.
The thanksgiving mass was held to recognize the Gulu Archdiocese for their successful leadership in the 2024 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo, a significant event in Uganda’s Christian calendar.
During his sermon, Archbishop Wokorach expressed concern over the rising influence of polygamy in society, warning that this practice often leads to discord and instability in families. He stressed that Christian values call for faithfulness and unity within families, which polygamy undermines.
He went on to address the growing influence of foreign cultures, particularly on the youth homosexuality is on the rise. The Archbishop noted that foreign customs, especially those from Western cultures, are starting to infiltrate African traditions and values. He encouraged parents to take an active role in guiding and shaping their children’s behavior, ensuring that they are not swayed by external influences that conflict with the moral teachings of the Church.
“Parents have a responsibility to guide their children, especially during these times when foreign behaviors and ideas are entering our African culture,” Archbishop Wokorach said. He highlighted the importance of preserving African traditions and values, particularly those related to family life and moral conduct.
Archbishop Wokorach’s message resonated with many of the faithful, who were reminded of the importance of upholding Christian teachings in their personal lives and in society. The Gulu Archdiocese, which played a key role in organizing the recent Martyrs’ Day celebrations, continues to be a spiritual guide for many in northern Uganda.
