The Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has responded to criticisms from the Opposition regarding the government’s proposed compensation to victims of the Kiteezi Landfill tragedy. The Premier suggested that if the Opposition believes the Shs2 million earmarked for each displaced tenant is insufficient, they should step in and offer their own support.
The remarks came after Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition, raised concerns about the small compensation amount. He questioned how families, whose homes were buried under garbage and who are now living in tents, would manage to rebuild their lives with such little financial assistance.
The Prime Minister defended the government’s plan, stating that the money was intended as immediate support for the displaced residents. However, she acknowledged the difficult situation the victims are facing and left the door open for further assistance.
The situation at Kiteezi Landfill has sparked wide debate, as families struggle to cope after their homes were destroyed by a massive garbage collapse. Many are calling for more comprehensive long-term solutions beyond the initial relief package.
