Earlier today, in an interview with a Ntinda-based media outlet, Butambala county member of parliament, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has shared his insights regarding General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s withdrawal from the upcoming presidential elections. Kivumbi, a vocal member of the opposition, emphasized that this decision does not eliminate Muhoozi’s future aspirations for the presidency.
According to Kivumbi, the general’s withdrawal may be a strategic move that could pave the way for a different path to power. He speculated that Muhoozi could be appointed as Vice President by his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who he recently endorsed. Kivumbi pointed out that such an appointment would position Muhoozi to eventually assume the presidency, strategically by Museveni becoming unfit for office, citing constitutional provisions that allow for such a transition.
Kivumbi’s remarks suggest a possible political maneuvering within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). He indicated that discussions within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) hint at a potential merger with the NRM, which could facilitate Muhoozi’s rise as Vice President and could set the stage for Muhoozi to launch a presidential campaign in 2031 as a sitting president after constitutionally taking over.
The MP did not shy away from calling out those who have historically opposed Muhoozi’s ambitions, particularly Kahinda Otafiire, warning them that they must act decisively now if they wish to thwart his political trajectory.
“The only way to stop Muhoozi is to stop his father, Museveni,” Kivumbi asserted, highlighting the intertwined nature of their political fates.
Kivumbi’s comments reflect the ongoing complexities of Uganda’s political landscape as various factions maneuver for influence ahead of the elections in 2026.
