In a political exchange earlier today on political show, the Member of Parliament for Buyaga West, Barnabas Tinkasimire, has urged the ruling NRM to intensify youth mobilization ahead of the upcoming elections. Barnabas expressed concerns that the party is becoming complacent, relying on the belief that General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has already secured the support of the youth for the NRM.
These comments were made in response to fellow legislator Kakembo Michael, MP for Entebbe Municipality, who praised Muhoozi’s politcal sense. Kakembo asserted that although many doubt Muhoozi’s leadership abilities, the general is, in fact, a sharp strategist. He claimed that Muhoozi’s actions, particularly positioning himself as a potential candidate for the 2026 presidential elections, were designed to attract young voters to the NRM.
However, Barnabas challenged this narrative, arguing that Muhoozi’s popularity is not as widespread as some may believe. He was particularly critical of suggestions that Muhoozi had successfully rallied the youth, warning the NRM not to rest on its laurels.
“I would like to say that even if there were elections within the army or police, Muhoozi wouldn’t win, “Barnabas remarked. His comments suggested skepticism regarding Muhoozi’s influence within even the country’s security forces, let alone the broader electorate.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, had stirred significant political debate when he hinted at a presidential bid for the 2026 elections. However, his recent decision to withdraw from the race and endorse his father has left many in the political landscape speculating about the future.
Some of Muhoozi’s supporters and subjects have historically been critical of the NRM’s long standing rule. This recent shift, with Muhoozi aligning himself with President Museveni and the NRM, raises questions about the direction of his political movement and the role it will play in the coming elections.
