Kabale – Police in Kabale have arrested five individuals in connection with a series of thefts and vandalism targeting solar-powered street lights in Kabale Municipality, causing damage valued at over UGX 225 million.
The suspects, identified as Ampaire Gerevazio alias Mukiga, 18, a herdsman from Kigongi Cell, Kabale Municipality; Muhereza Martin, 28, a businessman from Rubanda District; Mirembe Esera, 40, from Muruhita Village, Rubanda District; Habomugisha Gerevazio, 40, from Hamurwa Village, Rubanda District; and Arinaitwe Edita, 22, a businesswoman from Kakore Cell, Rubanda District, were arrested following a tip-off from local residents.
According to police reports, the suspects have been conspiring to commit theft and damage to street lighting infrastructure in the areas of Makanga, Rwakaraba, Rushoroza, and Nyabikoni within Kabale Municipality. The alleged crimes took place between July and September 2024.
Police say the suspects would steal the solar panels and other equipment, then sell the items in Rubanda District, where one Nuwamanya, the husband of suspect Arinaitwe Edita, is believed to have been a buyer. Nuwamanya is still at large, and efforts to arrest him are ongoing.
The police, together with municipal authorities and local leaders, have visited the crime scenes to assess the extent of the damage. Two solar batteries were recovered from suspects Mirembe Esera and another individual known as Mushwaza during the arrests.
The police are continuing investigations as they seek to apprehend other individuals involved in the operation. Kabale Police Station has registered several cases related to this matter, and more suspects are expected to be arrested.
“We are committed to ensuring that all those involved in this crime are brought to justice,” said ASP Elly Maate, Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson.
The five suspects remain in police custody as inquiries continue.
