Hold on to your seats, Uganda, because the Katikkiro of Buganda, Peter Mayiga, is stirring the pot once again! In a move that’s set tongues wagging across the country, Mayiga has thrown his support behind a bold new bill that could change the way Uganda’s political game is played.
So, what’s the fuss all about? It all started when Honorable Richard Lumu introduced a controversial bill proposing that the Leader of Opposition in Parliament should be elected by Members of Parliament, not handpicked by the largest opposition party, as has been the norm. And guess who is cheering the loudest? None other than Mayiga himself!
But wait, there’s more to this story! During the famous “Tofaali Run” in 2013, when Mayiga was rallying support for Buganda’s development fund, he found himself in Parliament face to face with then Leader of Opposition, Honorable Nathan Nandala Mafabi. And it was there that Mayiga dropped his own political bombshell, he proposed to him that the Leader of Opposition should always be the runner-up in the last presidential elections because, as Mayiga argued, this person would be the direct representative of those whose presidential dreams were dashed, their very own voice in Parliament, instead of relying on a representative of a party!
Now, here’s where things get juicy. Mayiga has never been shy about his skepticism towards Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, and his National Unity Platform. And if this bill gets the green lights, it could shake up the power dynamics for Kyagulanyi’s party in Parliament. Is it a coincidence that Mayiga seems unusually jubilant? Not really!
Mayiga’s latest move has everyone asking: Is this about fair representation, or is the Katikiro playing a clever game of political chess? Whatever the case, one thing is certain: Peter Mayiga has once again thrown himself into the thick of Uganda’s political drama, and everyone is waiting to see what happens next!
Grab your popcorn, Uganda. The drama is just unfolding!
