On Sunday, the nation bid farewell to one of its most outspoken and dynamic figures, Joseph Tamale Mirundi, a maverick political analyst, historian, and decorated veteran journalist.
Often referred to as a living encyclopedia of Uganda’s political landscape, Mirundi was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kalisizo. His passing marked the end of an era, but his legacy as a man of immense knowledge and courage will continue to influence and inspire for years to come.
The turnout at Mirundi’s burial was a powerful testament to the impact he had on the country. Known for his sharp wit, unfiltered commentary, and deep understanding of Uganda’s political history, Mirundi was a larger-than-life figure who dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth and the betterment of his nation. Many gathered to pay their final respects, recognizing that his life’s work had fulfilled a purpose far greater than many could achieve in a lifetime. As his body was gently lowered into its final resting place, it was clear that this was not just the conclusion of a life but the celebration of a legacy that had touched countless lives.
As the wise often say, the true measure of a man’s success is not in the wealth he accumulates, but in the lives he impacts. Tamale Mirundi embodied this philosophy to its fullest. His contributions to journalism, political analysis, and public discourse were immeasurable, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
However, despite all his accomplishments, Joseph Tamale Mirundi passed away without fulfilling a deeply personal dream—one that remained unknown to the public until it was revealed by his daughter, Nantongo Teddy, during the funeral. Nantongo, who had been managing Mirundi Media Consultancy, shared this poignant detail with the mourners, turning to Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo, the chief mourner, for assistance.
In her emotional address, Nantongo disclosed that her father had envisioned building a two-story plaza with a park yard. The first floor was to be lodged, while the second floor would house a library containing his vast collection of books—his cherished treasures and a testament to his lifelong dedication to knowledge and learning.
With her father’s dream left unrealized, Nantongo appealed to the Vice President to inform the president to help bring Mirundi’s vision to life, ensuring that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
“We appreciate your presence as we gather to honor our father’s life one final time. I have had the privilege of managing Mirundi Media Consultancy, the company responsible for publishing his books. Unfortunately, in recent times, the company has faced challenges and hasn’t been as profitable as we had hoped. However, my father had a vision—a dream he shared with me. He wanted to build a plaza with two floors: the first floor for lodges and the second floor to house his vast library. He had an extensive collection of books that meant the world to him. Vice-President, I humbly request your assistance in making Mirundi Plaza a reality, fulfilling the dream that my father held so dearly,” she said.
Nantongo added that establishing the library and the plaza would not only honor her father’s dream but also help preserve and continue Mirundi’s legacy for future generations.
The chief mourner, Vice President Jessica Alupo, offered the grieving family a heartfelt and reassuring promise. She firmly assured them that she would personally convey their request to the President, emphasizing her commitment to seeing Mirundi’s dream realized.
With a tone of determination, she promised that their wishes would be fulfilled, providing comfort to the family in their time of loss and ensuring that Joseph Tamale Mirundi’s legacy would live on through the completion of his envisioned project.
