Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has called on the Government to put into place the necessary education and skills development in youth to enable them to grow up as reproductive and responsible citizens. The call was made at a press conference, held on Wednesday at the UPC Head office, located in Uganda House in Kampala City.
Mr. Dan Isimbwa, UPC National Youth Leader, said; as Uganda is set to join the rest of the World in celebrating International Youth Day come 12th August 2024, the country seems to be at crossroads with the youth bulge which is increasingly becoming a challenge.
“This implies that the future of our young people lies in quality education coupled with science and technology that offers necessary skills and provides equitable opportunities for them to succeed in life”, he said.
Mr. Isimbwa said Uganda’s current education system lacks adequate resources at all levels (Primary, Secondary and University or Collage), which is responsible for what he termed as “Half baked” graduates in Uganda.
“The Schools are struggling to have the necessary inputs, teaching staff is wanting and its retention is increasingly becoming difficult”, he added.
He emphasized that; the legacy and values Ugandans deserve to carry forward must be passed on to the youth at an early stages, which calls for adequate preparation of young people at all levels.
“This goes with mentorship, training, education and inspiration. Talents must be identified at early stages and groomed”, he further said.
Regarding Sports development, Mr. Isimbwa said UPC calls on the Government to build modern infrastructure right from the District, Regional and National level.
“This will help in identifying and building talents, such as; football, Basketball, Netball, Boxing and Rugby among others from the grassroot”, he pointed out.
This Year’s International Youth Day will be celebrated under the theme: “Youth digital pathways for sustainable development”, while the National theme is: “Skills development for enhancement of youth opportunities”, which will be celebrated in Soroti City at National Level.
