KABALE – In a significant breakthrough, the territorial police in Kigezi have arrested two suspects and recovered numerous stolen motor vehicle number plates in an operation spanning three districts.
Anthony Arinaitwe, 18, and Brian Mugisa, 19, both residents of Ntungamo municipality, were apprehended on July 23, 2024, after a series of intelligence-led raids in Kabale, Rukungiri, and Rukiga districts.
“The suspects had been terrorizing motorists in the region, stealing number plates and demanding ransom. We are relieved to have put an end to their illegal activities,” said ASP Elly Maate, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson.
Maate added, “We urge motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police. We also appeal to the public to cooperate with us in combating crime.”
Police recovered 21 stolen number plates, including 9 from Rukiga district, which had not been reported missing. The majority of the recovered plates have been returned to their rightful owners.
The suspects will face charges in court upon completion of investigations.
This operation demonstrates the police’s commitment to tackling property crime and ensuring public safety in the Kigezi region.
