The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in collaboration with Huawei Technologies Uganda Co. Ltd are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the Green Sustainable Energy Industry and Stable National Grid Conference held in Kampala, Uganda. The conference, which took place on 18th July, 2024 at the Serena Hotel Kampala, brought together different stake holders and decision makers in the energy sector to participate in the work shop. These include, government ministries, agencies and departments, industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and innovators to discuss the future of clean energy in Uganda and its potential to cause positive transformation in the lives of many Ugandans.
The conference featured a series of insightful presentations and keynote speeches from visionary experts in the field of solar energy discussing various topics including Green Energy Industrialization, Carbon neutrality trajectory, stable and reliable grid, Last mile; Off grid and Rural Access and best practices for implementation. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with global experts and explore the latest innovations in solar energy technology provided by Huawei Technologies Co, Limited. Furthermore, the conference provided a platform for meaningful networking opportunities among top executives, fostering collaborations that are expected to drive future solar energy projects and initiatives in Uganda and beyond.
Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development in her remarks appreciated Huawei Technologies Uganda co. Limited for initiating such strategic partnerships to discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in Uganda’s quest for a sustainable and energy-efficient future.
She went on to state that infrastructure development, technological advancements, and financial investments are critical areas that require focused attention to optimally utilize the natural resources the country is endowed with. “To address these challenges, we must foster a collaborative environment where government, industry, academia, and civil society work hand in hand.” said Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa.
Eng. Irene Bateebe the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development affirmed the governments dedication to enhancing access to clean energy through digital solutions and commitment to maintaining a clean energy mix which is in alignment with international environmental protocols and addressing sustainability and climate change. She highlighted ongoing efforts, such as extending solar systems to remote areas and collaborating with the private sector players like Huawei Technologies to apply digital solutions to decentralize energy systems.
She also highlighted the other ongoing discussion with Huawei to provide more solutions to ensure better protection of systems and networks.
The Commissioner, Renewable Energy Department at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), Dr. Brian E. Isabirye (Ph.D.) made a presentation on Renewable Energy Development in Uganda; Carbon Neutrality Trajectory highlighting the status of the country’s renewable sector, opportunities, challenges and the national development plan to mitigate the current problems in the sector. He further went ahead to urge all the key stakeholders in attendance to join in the Ministry in attaining its renewable energy goals.
In addition, Nick Lusson, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power Eastern Africa Region, outlined trends in the global smart PV industry, including growth in smart string inverters for which Huawei is the principal promoter globally. Nick outlined Huawei’s commitment to increase research and development (R&D) investment in smart PV, to bring low-carbon and cleaner green energy to more people, families, and organizations in our commitment to bring clean energy to every person, home, and organization.“Diesel is one of the most expensive forms of energy. By investing in green energy, you can say goodbye to blackouts. We have manufactured quality systems that can be accessed at an affordable cost.” Lusson said.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited reaffirmed their commitment to promoting renewable energy and building a sustainable future for Uganda. The insights gained from this conference will play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives aimed at accelerating the development of solar energy projects through the country.
