In a controversial move that has sparked outrage among parents and students alike, the headteacher of Kisaasi College School Sekamatte Ibrahim has suspended a group of students for one week for not attending a party organised by the school.
According to the letter dated 6/7/2024, this heavy-handed decision also includes a fine of UGX100,000 for the damages caused.
In the letter, the school also demands the suspended students to report with their biological parents when the suspension period elapses.
The school party, intended as a fun and inclusive event, has instead become a flashpoint for debate on disciplinary measures and student rights. Critics argue that the headteacher’s actions are an overreaction and an unfair punishment for a minor infraction.
The headteacher, known for his strict policies, appears to have crossed a line in the eyes of many. Suspending students and imposing a financial penalty for missing a party is seen by some as an abuse of power and a move that prioritizes control over the well-being of the students.
This decision is viewed as excessive and sends a troubling message about the school’s priorities. Punishing students so severely for not attending a social event undermines the principles of fair and reasonable discipline. The financial penalty adds an unnecessary burden, raising questions about the accessibility and inclusivity of the school’s policies.
The requirement for the students to return with their biological parents and with zero balance for the second term has also been met with criticism. This stipulation unfairly targets students from diverse family structures and imposes additional emotional and logistical burdens on the families.
Critics on social media are raising significant concerns about the balance between discipline and personal freedom within educational institutions. It also calls into question the appropriateness of financial penalties in disciplinary actions, particularly in a school setting.
Meanwhile, the school in question belongs to former member of Parliament Latif Ssebagala who subscribes to the National Unity Platform.
