Kabale University alumni have kicked off a convocation drive aimed at buying a coaster bus to facilitate the education of gifted and disabled students.
The drive was launched last weekend with a 10Km marathon around Kabale Municipality involving old students (Alumuni), Kabale University Staff members and members of the community sarrounding the Kabale based Institution.
According to the chairperson of the Kabale University Convocation , Mr Byamukama Isaiah kanyamahane, the plan was to mobilize funds for the coaster bus whose purpose would be to generate income for the institution by hiring it out to organizations, and other members of the community seeking transport services.
Kanyamahane explained that proceeds from the coaster bus project would be channelled to the charity treasury of Kabale University, and specifically support the academically gifted female students, and People living with Disabilities -PWDs, who are unable to raise fees for their higher education.
Kanyamahane further noted that the bus would aid transportation of the University members of Staff and students, especially in the Sports Department.
Kabale university vice chancellor Prof Joy Kwesiga commended the work being done by the old students under the Convocation, adding that the Institution has vehicles for transport, but the number was not enough given the annual expansion of the Kabale University Community.
Mr. Kanyamahane said that the convocation campaigns for the procurement of the coaster bus would continue until the funds needed are fully realized.
