Earlier this year, the government issued fresh guidelines for Boda Boda riders in Kampala and the Metropolitan areas of Mukono and Wakiso districts.
While addressing Journalists at government owned Media center on Thursday,Rubaga division Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Anderson Burora who represented state minister for Kampala Kabuye Kyofatogabye,said that all bodaboda riders in Kampala who did not register at their respective stages will be affected by the reduction of stages in Kampala, and he mentioned some of these stages to be removed.
Burora said the enforcement is still ongoing to apprehend the big headed riders who refuse to follow guidelines put in place; however this will be done in phases.
In conclusion, Burora warned politicians not to take advantage of this campaign, but urged them and the general public media inclusive to support it.
The government wants to strictly enforce provisions of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, 1998 (Amendment) Act, 2020including riders to have permits before getting on the road. All this is intended to improve road safety in the country and the capital city in particular.
Previous attempts by the government including that in 2013 to register BodaBodas in Kampala failed, among others, having received stiff opposition from some Boda Boda associations. In 2020, the government also announced plans to register riders postponed due to challenges posed by COVID 19.
