Police in Kanungu are investigating circumstances under which a 20 years old man died suddenly and two others seriously injured during an alcohol distilling exercise.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate identified the deceased as Emmanuel Akankunda, a S.3 student of Nyakinoni Secondary School in Nyakinoni sub county, Kanungu District.
The injured victims were named as 53 year old Flavia Bikorwomuhangi, mother to the deceased and 16 years old son only identified as Tukasingura.
Maate told journalists that the incident allegedly took place on Wednesday afternoon at Hakibungo cell in Western Ward, Nyamirama Town Council in Kanungu district.
The three family members were distilling local brew (waragi) at Ahamulindi stream, and all over a sudden the brewing drum burst, blew off the top cover and crude waragi burnt Emmanuel to death by shattering his head into pieces before seriously injuring two others.
Maate said that when the Police was notified, the scene was visited by the Police Officer in charge Nyamirama together with team who documented the scene of crime, took the body to Nyamirama Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination and the two victims are receiving treatment at the same medical facility.
Maate told journalists that a case of sudden death was registered at Kanungu Central Police Station under reference number CRB 249/2022 to help in Police investigation.
