Ugandans on social media have roasted the Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu for spending lot of time commenting on English premier league teams instead of speaking out on matters of national importance.
While concluding his sermon at Namirembe Cathedral last Sunday, Dr Kazimba in a sarcastic way said, “May God comfort you, may God give them hope you need, even those who have lost in other areas of football, especially Man U, may God comfort you because you need that.”
After the Arsenal’s win on Wednesday night against Chelsea, the man of God went on his Twitter handle (not sure if it’s his official account) and posted calling for prayers for Manchester United fans and players. “Last night, @Arsenal did it again! Nketiah, Smith Rowe and Saka scored. What a spectacular performance against @ChelseaFC! As we celebrate this 4-2 win, we continue to pray for our players and fans of other clubs in the League especially @ManUtd. May God comfort them!”
To sports fans especially Arsenal supporters, the tweet was warmly welcomed. However most Ugandans looked at it as a mockery and in turn they attacked him by blaming him for keeping quiet on major issues affecting the country, yet he has even the guts of talking about less important issues like English premier league match results.
Here are some of the comments from netizens:
Mukalazi Kibs “@Archbp_COU of all the hard times the country is going through, of torture, high prices on essential commodities, coffee bills you’re busy posting arsenal? I pity you.”
I’m against GBV “Sorry your grace, but your voice is more needed on torture on women than at Arsenal. Anyways your regime also did it again.”
Ottafire Odonga Otto “Is this an official handle of the Arch Bishop? If so, then the church of Uganda is doomed.”
The Honey Guy, “Talk about the high prices and the torture happening, you’re too much concerned about the Premier League, yet on Sunday you will be asking people to contribute to the church house.”
Boy child Activist; “What kind of Bishop did God give us this time? This country is under a certain kind of witchcraft, we have tortured, coffee Pentti, high prices and all you can’t forget is tweeting about a hopeless Arsenal, had it been Uganda premier league kale, God why why?”
Elias Bishweko; “But really with all the national issues in our country, how do we wake up to such from a national leader?”
Yona Isiga “Your Grace!… I think we should write a letter to the ‘Church in United’ assuring them of our constant prayers and confirming we are visiting them over the weekend.”
Arnold Mugisha Musinguzi “The person of the archbishop of the nation shall not be reduced into yapping when serious issues at hand have been ignored all in the name of deflecting the course of action. The Voice of the archbishop is needed for the critical issues at hand!”
Opira Ambrose; Is this man OK? Does he want to divide his flock?
Moses Insight; Ok, let’s say you like football, you have never said anything about local football oli mu @Arsenal, @chelsea Mutama banaddini bakuno”
Keza Brendah; “Funny enough you are always quiet on issues concerning human torture and killings”
Opusi; “Did you see this or you are pretending. Everyone is expecting you to have commented on this. You are busy with Football?? Surely people are looking up to people like you to get strength and stand up again but you are busy on Arsenal. It is unbelievable. Are you also preparing for the birthday.
Mr Responsible; “If you all thought these preachers are there for us Ugandans, then we are too optimistic to a point of delusion. These preachers are just crooks with a book. I expect the preacher to come strong on the torture of women. But see the priority. Arsenal”
Love is a Human right; “It’s very sad and painful that even religious leaders forgot about Uganda and issues that matter in our country and focused on arsenal yet the rebel government is killing Ugandans and also looting our nation.”
