Over 500 Pupils in Wimunupecek primary school are learning under the trees, and others sharing classes as the school lack classroom following a wild wind that blew off their classroom roof in August 2020.
The classrooms affected severely include primary one to three who are studying under the tree, and the rest of the classes being shared as; primary four to five in one room and primary six to seven in another one room with an overall enrolment of over 500.
A teacher who preferred anonymity said that the classrooms were destroyed by the wild almost two years ago without any intervention from the district, partners, and well-wishers.
“Teachers have been compelled to conduct lessons under trees as they wait for the government and parents to fix the classrooms,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Lira Palwo sub-county chairperson, Geoffrey Oweka admitted that the condition of the school needs urgent intervention as studies have been resumed. “No budget was made for the school, but it was allocated under the unfunded priorities by the district planning unit” Oweka adds.
According to Geoffrey, the tragedy was reported to both the district education officer and other leadership in line with education for it to be looked into, but to date, nothing was done and pupils are learning under trees.
Recently, the chairperson education standing committee who doubles as the councilor V for disabled persons, Vento Scovia Akot said the district has received complaints about the condition of the school, and they are planning since releases from the central government come late. This affects planned activities of the district including the renovation of the school in question.
According to Vento, the district executive will sit and pass a budget as a supplementary since funds meant for the school were returned by the ministry.
