The leadership of Kibuli Muslim faction has denied reports that it reconciled with the leadership of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC at Old Kampala.
During a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on Tuesday, it was reported that the rivaling Muslim sects had reconciled .
“I am happy because we as NRM discovered long time ago that unity is strength. We have always preached against disunity. I want to thank you for reaching this unity,” the President while meeting Muslim leaders from all sects of Old Kampala, Kibuli and Nakasero.
The delegation headed by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje was at State House to brief the President about an agreement reached between the factions and uniting as one body.
According to Sheikh Mubajje, on Monday they signed a Unity Agreement between Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), the Kibuli group and the Nakasero group to unite as one body at a function held at Gaddafi National Mosque in Kampala.
President Museveni commended the Muslim groups for this action and noted that different people have different talents and abilities which are useful only when they come together.
“The eight years I spent fighting Amin, I was actually helped by Muslims like Abbas Kibazo of Kibuli, Zubair Bakali, among others. So uniting with all groups including Muslims helped us win because unity is power,” the President emphasized.
However, according to Dr Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, the Director, Communication, Research and International Relations at Kibuli, the Office of the Supreme Mufti was neither invited nor involved in the purported unity talks.
“We wish to categorically inform the General Public that the Office of the Supreme Mufti is an independent legal entity with its own constitution based on the Quran and Sunnah to guide the actions and decisions associated with provision of ethical leadership and governance of Muslim Affairs in Uganda,” Dr Kiggundu said in a statement dated 13th April, 2022.
“…. We therefore in the strongest terms possible refute the impression created that Sheikh Silliman Kasule Ndirangwa, Sheikh Mahmood Kibaate, Sheikh Abdul Obeid Kamulegeya and Sheikh Hamid Kateregga have the mandate to represent or speak for the Office of the Supreme Mufti and they are not part of the administration of the Office of the Supreme Mufti.”
Dr Kiggundu further disclosed that as Kibuli Muslim leadership they are open to honest, genuine and sincere engagements leading to Muslim unity and quality service delivery to the Muslim community.
