The Kabale Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma has stopped money lenders in the district from taking over land or any property from loan defaulters.
This follows a presidential directive in which the Head of State Yoweri Kaguta Museveni banned all land evictions across the country that are carried out without the consent of the respective District Security Committees (DSC).
In a February 28, 2022, letter to the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, Museveni used his powers under Article 98(1) and 99(1) of the Constitution that enjoins him to ensure good governance and protect the Constitution to stop any evictions that are not given green light by the DSCs.
Speaking to our reporter in his office, Nyakahuma revealed that moneylenders have always been involved in the lending process targeting people’s property. He also revealed that there has been connivance between the money lenders and court bailiffs who grab people’s property especially land even before loan time has elapsed, which makes the process fraudulent.
He added that even a court order evicting people from their land should first be submitted to the district security committee for verification, according to a presidential order. Nyakahuma hence directed all local council chairpersons to stop land evictions unless they have been sanctioned by the district committee.
