A sum of 100 billion shillings has been set aside by Wakiso Planning Authority, as the net budget for the next financial year 2022/2023.
The funds are aimed at boosting agriculture, animal industry, trade and markets, environmental conservation, rehabilitation of roads and bridges in the central business district.
Strategic allocation was done after a well thought through process, and wider consultations by the district planning Authority, endorsed by the Lc5 chairperson, Mr.Matia Lwanga Bwanika.
While announcing this development, deputy district Chairperson Ms. Nantege Betinah, who is in charge of the district financial Committe and also member of the executive, said drafting this budget was a formidable task.
She stressed that there was some unease in raising funds for the previous year’s budget, due abject poverty among people, and uncertainties created by disastrous effects of Covid-19.
“Our budget did not materialise as we expected due to inevitable challenges like negative impacts of Covid-19 on people’s earnings, and to that effect, inadequate taxes were collected and as a result, we did not get sufficient funds like we expected,” remarked Ms. Nantege.
“At this time, we are looking at many responsibilities like boosting the health sector, improving the roads and paying workers,” she added.
In this new budget, the education sector will be strengthened, and was given priority, with an allocation of Shs.31.3 billion.
Shs.19.10 billion was set aside for the health sector, while Shs.11.10 billion went to environmental conservation.
Besides, Shs.7.5 billion was apportioned to the transport and roads sector, while Shs.1.4 billion was reserved for water and sewage.
Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, in the Finance ministry Ramathan Ggoobi, recently released planning figures to local government authorities for 2022/2023 financial year, showing government expects about Shs.212 billion as revenue from local governments.
Formerly part of Mpigi District, Wakiso came into existence in 2000, when three counties of Mpigi District, which include Busiro, Kyadondo and Entebbe Municipality became Wakiso District.
