The Speaker of 11 Parliament Rt Hon Anita Among has promised that in her tenure as the leader of the August House all unsolved issues between Buganda and the Central government will be solved.
The Bukedea District Women Member of Parliament made her pledge while meeting the Buganda Premier Charles Peter Mayiga who has gone to pay tribute to the fallen Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah on Friday. She revealed that she is aware of the unsettled issues between Buganda Kingdom and the government and she promised that she will fight harder to see that all of them are settled.
“We are going to make sure that we work with the Kingdom, we know very well there are some unsolved issues between the Kingdom and the government but we are going to work hand in hand with my deputy to ensure that we resolve all the outstanding issues concerning the Buganda kingdom. We are also aware of the issues of rent and the issues of the land. We have had talks with the attorney general and I can say that the government is much willing to settle everything,” Among said.
The Speaker also promised Katikiro Mayiga that soon after sitting with the executive, she will be able to give the feedback to the kingdom in two weeks time. She also appreciated the heart of reconciliation that was expressed on Thursday between Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo and the Buganda Kingdom.
“We thank God for what happened yesterday between the kingdom and the Chief Justice, and I know we are going to have a number of issues to resolve courtesy of Jacob’s death everything happens for the reason.”
In his address, Mayiga praised the fallen Speaker as an impactful leader who has left a legacy that will always be remembered.
“Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah was an impactful leader and I think that was the nature of his life, as a lawyer he made a huge impact and of course has been extremely impactful when it comes to politics raising from being an MP to become a Speaker of Parliament. One could even say that Oulanyah has been impactful in death.”
He encouraged leaders to pick lessons from Oulanyah’s life who was a person that held no grudge and was free to everyone.
“While death is such a sad thing, I think the process of reconciliation and working together manifested itself in the death of Jacob Oulanyah that is why I call him an impactful leader. I think all of who served the late Speaker have a duty to put the common good on top of your priorities.”
Mayiga also urged the new sitting Speaker and her Deputy to imitate the former for the love he had for the common person. He said that Parliament has a key role to play in the Social and economic transformation of Uganda and if they can prioritize the interest of the common person such as how they live, work, the health services they receive when they visit health centres, the education they receive from the schools and the opportunities that are accorded to them. “If we do that and accord that common good, I think we shall have remembered the late Jacob Oulanyah appropriately.”
