Police are holding a man in Buyende district accused of killing and chopping his wife’s body into pieces.
The suspect is Charles Tenywa, a resident of Bulangira zone, in Gumpi sub-county, in Buyende district. He is accused of brutally killing his wife, Christine Namusobya, 30.
He reportedly chopped his wife’s body into pieces using an axe, wrapped the pieces in a sack and hid it under their bed before alerting the police. Tenywa, who has since confessed to the crime, voluntarily handed over himself to Buyende central police station where he is detained awaiting prosecution.
Police have handed over the deceased’s body to Kamuli general hospital mortuary, for postmortem. It is alleged that the couple developed misunderstandings on Tuesday morning when Tenywa accused his wife of adultery.
“My wife used to leave home early in the pretext of clearing the farm before sunrise, only to meet up with his lover. On receiving information from locals, I lost control and killed her,” reads Tenywa’s statement in part.
Linda Namwase, a resident of the area, says that Gender-Based Violence-GBV cases are on the rise due to the presumed supremacy and insecurity of the men. “Most men regard their wives as some sort of property. They are possessive and controlling, which has since fueled GBV cases in several homes within our village,” she said.
Busoga North police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha says that a team of detectives visited the scene of the crime and retrieved an axe and blood-stained clothes belonging to the deceased. He asked men to treat their wives as helpers rather than inferior parties.
