Women denying conjugal rights to their habitual alcohol drinking husbands, has been cited among the main causes of Domestic Violence -GBV in Kabale District.
This was revealed on Friday, during a dialogue between Kabale District Local leaders, Law enforcement authorities, peeer educators and civil society activists, to discuss GBV at Karubanda Catholic Church, in Buhara subcounty, Kabale District.
The dialogue was organized by the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) under a three year Gender Accountability and Peace project (GAPP) being implemented in the two Sub Counties of Buhara and Kamuganguzi in Kabale district.
The FOWODE male champion in Bugarama parish Warren Tumusiime said that he was reliably informed that a section of women were denying their husbands conjugal rights and because men could not disclose to friends for fear of embarassment, they ended up fighting their wives which at times resulted into family breakages.
However, The FOWODE peer facilitator in Rwene parish, Buhara Subcounty Margret Orikiriza said that she had received complaints from some women that their husbands had a habbit of spending most of the night time in bars and were therefore too drunk to do any bed time activity by the time they reached home.
Speaking during the meeting, the Officer In charge of Child and Family Protection Unit at Kabale Central Police station IP Margret Kamiranga confirmed that she recorded cases in which men disclosed that they were denied conjugal rights . However, Kamiranga blamed it on men for neglecting their responsibilities at home arguing that it is how they lost ground for demanding their congugal rights.
The FOWODE Kabale branch Field Officer, Dorothy Kesiime Naturinda said that the Gender Accountability and Peace project was launched in 2020 and it would be phased out at the end of 2023. She explained that Buhara and Kamuganguzi Subcounty were prioritized out of all subcounties in Kabale District due to a high rate of alcoholism that bleeds numerous cases of GBV in the areas.
