The opposition’s Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party has condemned in the strongest terms, the continued attacks on journalists and media freedom in Uganda by the security forces.
To say this, the ANT party leader Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu was briefing the press at the party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday. He took note of the deteriorating environment for safety of journalists in the country, saying it is a dangerous trend of targeted attacks against the media that is gaining ground in Uganda.
Muntu said, writing about the failures of NRM Government is not a crime and it doesn’t mean that someone who does so violates the law. He noted that citing loopholes in service delivery instead wakes up government.
Gen Muntu added that the arrest and detention of Journalists like those of Digitalk Television, is a clear indication that Government hates journalists, yet journalism is not a crime.
The former Forum for Democratic Change president further called on President Yoweri Museveni as Commander in Chief to be accountable and restrain his troops from engaging in unprovoked attacks against journalists and other citizens.
