A UPDF solider attached to the chieftaincy of Military intelligence-CMI has been arrested,along with two others for kidnapping Stephen Mugabo of Rukiga district before demanding for ransom.
Mugabo was recently kidnapped from his home In Kakamba cell, Kibanda Parish Kamwezi sub county in Rukiga District.
He was kidnapped last month on 30th October 2021 at around 10:00am from his home by kidnappers who demanded Shs5 million ransom. However,his family raised Shs3 million and he was released by his captors.
The arrested suspects include, RO 12854 Captain Kwesiga Apollo,32, attached to Masaka armored brigade (CMI), Arinaitwe Benon, 37 and owner of M/V UAX 039L used in the kidnap and Nsiime Patience 25, a girlfriend to Kwesiga.
Elly Maate the Kigezi region police spokesperson says that with the help of CCTV Command center at Naguru Kampala, Police managed to arrest three people who were driving in the same motor vehicle No UAX 039L at the time it was impounded at Sanga Check point in Kiruhura District on the very 30/10/2021.
Maate adds that upon interrogation Benon and Apollo accepted to have carried out the kidnap together with one Musiime Abel who is still at large.
The Kigezi region mouthpiece added that the duo revealed to have kidnapped Mugabo from his home, drove with him in the vehicle while demanding for a ransom for his release up to Mbirizi town within Masaka District. They noted that upon receiving a ransom of Shs 3m, they drove back to Lyantonde town where they withdrew the money from the victim’s Mobile money account and there after facilitated his movement to Mbarara town where he continued his way back home.
Maate told our reporter that police carried out a search on their vehicle and recovered an AK 47 No 83-XU 7644 with 30 rounds of live ammunition, Cash Shs500,000 and an army Camouflage jacket.
Maate asked the public to desist from such acts of torturing innocent people and look for wealth in a transparent manner other than killing and torturing people.
Maate also noted that the trio and the motor vehicle are currently detained/ parked at CPS Rukiga respectively pending further management under Rukiga CRB 564/2021.
