There’s a lot of excitement since Tuesday evening as President Museveni named his new Cabinet, minus some bigger than life ministers who have overstepping their mandates.
In the new Cabinet line up, Mr Museveni named Jessica Alupo, Vice President and Robinah Nabbanja premier.
The two were shock nominees.
However, analysts say, the message in the president’s appointments indicated he was fed up with seemingly sophisticated elites who disappointed him in execution of their mandate.
In nominating tested mobilisers rather than elite technocrats, Mr Museveni spoke loudly. Elites weren’t any better than grassroot politicians.
It said some powerful ministers have been siphoning government resources with reckless abandon, or, facilitated transactions for personal gain at the expense of Ugandan citizens.
On social media there’s a debate over a powerful minister who was sacked to the relief of especially investors and the business community.
Mr Museveni has been lauded for removing the Minister nicknamed Mr 30%, owing to Commissions he has been demanding from government transactions he facilitated in his docket.
“The president has done very well to remove xxxx from Cabinet.” Said a commentator, adding, “This guy has been a constant nuisance in the parliamentary seat- where he earned himself a nickname “Mr 30%”.”
According to this commentator, “no single deal wouldn’t go past without him demanding for a cut- with no regard for investors, youth starting up, foreigners supporting Ugandans- it was all for his pocket”.
- The former minister, a lawyer by profession, has been accused of using his law firm to swindle money.
“The figures included Shs1.6b to Head Debt Recovery Services Ltd and another $48,294 made (xxxxx) in favour of Entebbe Handling Services.
On addition, MPs had summoned this minister over vehicle inspection contract which is suspected to be another scam…
“Is there a possibility that he wanted to embezzle the monies from these cars, or he wanted to benefit from their taxes?”
In August 2020, this minister was named in the property scandal belonging to the late Nanyonga Ziba also known as Charm.
It was said that the former minister travelled to London during Charm’s hospitalization and obtained her signature which was used to sell off her properties in London and grab deposits on her London bank accounts.
“The removal of this idiot is the best thing Museveni has done this year,” Concluded the commentator.
