Greenhill Academy Secondary School has sent learners home following a surge in Covid-19 cases.
In a statement released by the school management on 31 May, 2021, the head teacher Wilberforce Kamengo the move is aimed at at containing the contagious nature of the virus variant and as well disinfect the school environment.
“There’s a new variant of Covid-19 that is sweeping the entire country. We have registered a few confirmed cases and as a result, we are sending students home for two weeks to curb the contagious nature of the variant,”Mr Kamengo said in a notice to parents of S.1 and S.2.
“Students will be released today 31 May, 2021 starting at 2pm.”
Mr Kamengo further revealed that the students will be expected back on Sunday June 13th (Boarding between 10am and 4pm) and the day students at 7am on June 14th, 2021.
“In the meantime, we will conduct online studies for the two classes(S.1 and S. 2) beginning Friday 4th June, 2021. You are encouraged to remain vigilant about the new variant by observing all the established Standard Operating Procedures.”
The development comes at a time when Uganda is in the second wave of Covid-19. So far the East African country has 47,147 cumulative confirmed cases with 362 deaths.
