Outspoken NBS TV journalist Samson Kasumba has trolled the National Unity Platform [NUP] for appointing opposition leaders in Parliament.
To Kasumba, by taking such a move, it means NUP has conceded defeat to President Yoweri Museveni despite claims that their 14 January presidential victory was robbed by the latter.
NUP, by virtue of their position as the main opposition political party in the eleventh Parliament announced their opposition leaders where Mathias Mpuuga was appointed Leader of Opposition (LOP) along with a number of others in the various positions.
Kasumba however took to his Twitter handle to scorn the Kamwokya outfit for demonstrating double standards by portraying themselves as winners in this year’s presidential elections on one hand yet doing things that cement the legitimacy of the ruling regime on the other.
Sarcastically using the the example of developed democracies, Kasumba said that announcing opposition leaders in parliament for a political party after an election is tantamount to giving a concession speech. As such, he seems to suggest that by blindly drinking to their ‘we won the election narrative’, NUP is ‘chasing air’.
“In many mature democracies and I am not suggesting Uganda is, when you ‘lose’ an election, you do one of two things: 1. You either give a concession speech or 2. You appoint a shadow cabinet. The two mean the same thing so I am told by my sources in these places. #Logic.” Kasumba tweeted yesterday.
The highly combative tweet has widely been interpreted by the public to be a direct response to his humiliation at the hands of MP Mpuuga during a live interview early this week.
In a news hour live interview, Kasumba was preempting to have a comment from the politician after his party had said it would announce its choice for LOP within the week. He thus asked to know for the benefit of the viewers what it would imply given that they had ” claimed” to have won the elections.
In his response, Mpuuga – now Leader of Opposition who seemed disenchanted by the question publicly destroyed the journalist whose question he claimed was not befitting his status. He also alleged that Kasumba could have been setting him up after all he had witnessed the irregularities in the election they were contesting, making it undebatable that it was rigged.
