The Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng’s Friday media address on measures being undertaken by the country to prevent a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic has sent shock waves among Ugandans.
With the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant detected in the country earlier, more stringent measures targeting travellers from India have specifically been put in place to curb a resurgence in infections.
All passengers/ passenger flights originating from India as of 1st May 2021, midnight are suspended until further notice and travelers from India shall not be allowed into Uganda regardless of the route of travel. Yet those who have been to India in the last two weeks will be denied entry regardless of the route used.
As for travelers arriving from India before suspension date regardless of the route of travel are expected to possess a negative PCR COVID-19 test certificate that is digitally verifiable conducted within 120 hours from the time of sample removal.
The announcement has already caused panic among Ugandans fearing that the new wave could force the government to announce a fresh lockdown amid fears of a resurgence in infections.
The new lethal variant – double mutant has been devastating India causing a spike in deaths especially among the elderly population of the very populous Asian Country.
