MIKE SSEGAWA: This is why Erias Lukwago joined FDC, how it’s disorganizing People Power

For some years, Kampala Lord Mayor has been undecided on the decision of which political party he would call home.

In Democratic party, where he has life membership, Lukwago has reached a deadlock since his fall out with Ssebaana Kizito and subsequently Norbert Mao presidencies.

It was however clear that Lukwago although he was an independent Lord Mayor, his politics was more inclined towards the Forum for Democratic Change.

And all along opposition strongman Kizza Besigye was accused of overstaying on the Frontline, he always looked behind himself and saw Lukwago as a loyal follower and friend he would pass a mantle of leading the opposition.

And this is what is happening in FDC.

The unveiling of Erias Lukwago as FDC member has not therefore shocked anyone. However it is his anointing of him as presidential flag bearer for FDC that’s going to cause an uproar in opposition as well as the vacant position in Kampala.

Besigye has been looking at Lukwago and Nandala Mafabi as his natural successors. In fact, according to reliable sources, Besigye never wanted to stand in the 2016 elections, preferring either of the two people to be on the presidential ballot paper.

However, the FDC think-tank asked for more time to prepare itself for Lukwago and Nandala.

As of now, Nandala, the secretary general of FDC has a lot on his plate. Besigye has been uncomfortable with endorsing Bobi Wine whose red army has been insulting him online for refusing to endorse him.

Lukwago’s time has finally arrived. He is Besigye’s blue eyed boy. His City Hall is also home to Besigye’s Diehards, and he has proved his willingness to groom young FDC cadres such as Doreen Nyanjura,a key player in FDC’s radical wing.

On Tuesday, Lukwago is arriving at Najjanankumbi, not as a stranger but one legitimatizing his marriage with a girl he has been in Cohabitation.

However, the news is going to cause a rapture in People Power, rather, Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform which hoped Besigye had been pushed out. Now, Lukwago cannot easily be bulldozed. People Power are going to turn their guns on Lukwago. It is a showdown that should be watched unless Bobi Wine is now willing to sit down with Lukwago and iron out things.

The other open dice is Kampala Lord Mayorship. Lukwago has sacrifice his safe seat for the presidential flag. Now this opens a pandora box. Many aspirants didn’t see Lukwago going away. Now, Kampala Lord Mayorship is going to wide shot for anyone…NRM, FDC, People Power, DP, anyone.
