People Power movement Leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has launched a new political party ahead of 2021 general elections.
Bobi Wine has taken over the leadership of National Unity Platform (NUP) political party as president. It was previously headed by Nkonge Kibalama who says this was a merger between NUP and People Power at the party’s delegates conference on 14th July.
“The National Unity Reconciliation and Development Party was formed in December 2004 and we certified government requirements. We are up to date, there is nothing lacking in terms of accountability; we come here with clean hands,” Kibalama said.
Kibalama also noted that the partnership between his party and People Power has been in the making since Bobi Wine won the parliamentary elections in Kyadondo East in 2017.
“We followed him closely and wondered how his message echoed our inner feelings. We admired Mr Kyagulanyi for that matter because the issues he was concerned with were issues of Ugandans. We reached out to him and we have been talking since then.”
The people power spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi revealed that all their candidates will use an umbrella as their symbol during general elections.
On the issue of other political parties that were in talks with People Power such as JEEMA, Alliance for National Transformation, Ssenyonyi said that soon they are going into alliance with them.
“We have not left back other political parties. This platform launched today is to create an independent path that candidates who picked the nomination forms from People Power will use on the ballot paper and even on their posts however soon we are going to have an alliance with other political parties and we shall call it People Power alliance,” said Ssenyonyi.
