The resident district commissioner-RDC for Kabale District Darius Nandinda has said Rwandan patients had been overwhelming Ugandan health centers along the Uganda/Rwanda border before Kigali barred her citizens from crossing into Uganda.
According to Nandinda, Rwandans would illegally cross into Uganda through ungazetted border points seeking medical attention until Rwanda closed her borders with Uganda in February 2019.
When Rwanda closed her borders, she urged her citizens not to dare cross into Uganda, as several of them would be shot dead upon being arrested while attempting to cross.
Before Rwanda closed her borders with Uganda, some of her citizens living with HIV would receive their ARV’s from Ugandan health centers.
Nandinda made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon while receiving a consignment of drugs from the chairperson of the National Resistance Movement –NRM Party in Ndorwa East constituency Mrs Grace Bekunda Ankunda Bwesigye.
Bekunda donated a consignment of drugs worth Shs 72 million to all 24 health centers in her constituency.
She made the donation through the Kabale District Coronavirus task force that is headed by the Resident District Commissioner-RDC Mr. Darius Nandinda in a function that occurred at the District Rukiiko hall.
According to Bekunda, she had intended to do a health camp in March this year in Ndorwa East County before coronavirus emerged and halted their plans yet she had procured the drugs. She estimated the camp to benefit at least 2,000 people.
The drugs donated include amoxicillin, Folic acid, Omeprazole, Paracentamol, Diclofenac, Metrondazole, doxycycline among other drugs.
Alfred Besigensi, the Kabale district health officer applauded Bekunda for the donation, saying she has supplemented governments’ efforts by supplying the drugs to health centers.
