The Mountain Division Court in Kasese has charged four Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers with the murder of Benon Musimenta.
On Monday, the army court chaired by Lt.Col. Felix Nyero sitting at Karusandara in Kasese charged Pte.Abraham Lokwap,23, Pte.Jackson Nyero,23, Pte.Joel Otim,23 and their commander Lt. Talent Akampurira,34 of murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act.
The accused last week shot at close range and killed Musimenta, a lay reader at Kogere archdeaconry in South Rwenzori Diocese.
According to the UPDF 222nd Brigade spokesperson Captain Fidel Sonko Masumbuku, the patrol soldiers were targeting thieves that were stealing road construction materials on Hoima- Kasese road mistakenly shot dead Musimenta at 6 am at Karungibate in Hima town council. Musimenta was carrying his wife on a motorcycle to the garden.
Musimenta’s wife Allen who was admitted at Hima health centre III said, “The UPDF soldiers who were standing on both sides of the road stopped us and before they could talk to us, I saw one of them crossing the road from one side before opening fire at my husband. The motorcycle lost control before my husband and I fell as he bled profusely. He was shot in the neck.”
