Police in Rubanda District is investigating circumstances under which two people died and two others survived when the boat they were using to cross Lake Bunyonyi capsized.
It’s alleged that on 24/06/2020 at around 5:40 pm while on lake Bunyonyi in Rubanda district, Ninsima Moreen female aged 15,a student of Creamland high school Kabale, and Kakuru Edivance female aged 15 who was a pupil Kyenyi primary school drowned and died instantly.
On the Cruise,one Ndyomugabe Robert male aged 18, and a student of creamland high school o and Akampurira Milvil aged 12 of Karambo primary school survived as result of swimming.
Elly Maate, The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson said these people were using a local canoe near Karambo landing site before the boat just capsized.
He said the Cause of capsizing hasn’t been established but the deceased didn’t have safely gears like life jackets.
The body of Kakuru has been retrieved by local divers after it was seen floating on the water moments later. Search is on for another body.
Lake Bunyonyi is about 900 m (3,000 ft), which makes it the second-deepest lake in Africa,fifth in the world.
This case has been registered at Muko police Post under file number SD 12/24/06/2020.
