The hacker who took over the Nile Breweries Limited website could be part of the beer company’s IT team, a source has intimated.
On Tuesday, an unidentified hacker took over the company’s website – www.nilebreweries.com – and demanded that a classified formula for one of their beers is released within the next 24 hours. The hack happened beten 10am and 11.30am according to ceo.co.ug.
“This is message to Nile Breweries. I have gone through your servers and discovered that you have been sitting on a beer formula,” the invisible hacker says, adding that failure to produce the said beer, the formula would go public.
But a source privy to the matter has said the ‘hacking’ was done by the company’s ICT team, with the backing of top management ahead of a ‘disruption campaign.’
“It is a PR stunt as they garner some attention to launch either a campaign or a new brand of beer,” the source told Watchdog Uganda.
At the moment, the company locally produces Nile Gold, Club Pilsner, Castle Lite, Castle Milk Stout, Eagle Lager, Eagle Extra, Eagle Dark, Eagle Poa and Chairman’s ESB and the flagship Nile Special lager.
NBL has an estimated 57 percent share of the Ugandan beer market.
