The Ministry of Water and Environment has commissioned a Shs452million small scale irrigation scheme in Rwenshande Iterero ward Nyamunuuka town council Kajara county Ntungamo district on Wednesday.
The pilot project was implemented by the ministry’s water production Regional Center West with funding from government of Uganda to improve on high value crops such as tomatoes, water melons, cabbages, and coffee and banana plantations in dry corridors.
The assistant commissioner in charge for water production ministry of water and environment Eng John Twinomujuni noted that project will be on 20 acres of land benefiting 20 families but it’s expandable.
The project follows a presidential directive to have at least one or two irrigation schemes in every district across the country for commercial farming.
Eng Twinomujuni said over 77 irrigation schemes have been commissioned in the country.
He revealed that the district has got three other schemes of South Ankole diocese at Kyamate, Murambi in Kibeho and Kagugu in Rubaare but they are still offing.
During the technical handover of Rwenshande small scale demonstration irrigation scheme held at James Tinkamanyire’s compound, the RDC Ntungamo George Bakunda appealed to the beneficiaries to be model farmers and produce products in bulky for its sustainability of the project.
RDC Bakunda hailed the NRM government for fulfilling the NRM manifesto of extending water for production across the country.
The Kajara county MP Hon Timuzigu Micheal Kamugisha called on ministry to consider small scale farmers who cannot afford the expensive ones.
Hon Timuzigu thanked the Rwenshande Irrigation association headed by James Tinkamanyire for the initiation and asked them to jealously look after the River Kahangye water source.
The Ntungamo Woman MP Hon Beatrice Rwakimaari hailed the NRM government for the considering Ntungamo first and assured the public that other projects are coming in dry areas of Kashenyi, Kafunjo and Kibeho.
Other speakers were CAO Ntungamo Joanitah Nakityo, Nyamunuuka Town council chairperson Sadarah Kahindi, James Tinkamanyire, Dennis Singahache, Rev Fr Oscar Ahimbisibwe and Bishop south Ankole Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe.
