President Museveni has asked authorities at Lira University Teaching Hospital in Lira District to stop offering free medical services.
Over time this university hospital has been offering free medical services to locals since health Centres in the area are far from reach for most patients.
The President made the remarks during the first graduation ceremony of Lira University on Saturday.
“We should not overburden the university with too many patients because they will not be teaching but instead treating many patients in the hospital,” said Museveni.
He added that because there is free medical care in government hospitals such as health centres 2,3 and 4, regional referrals and national hospitals, people who go to Lira University Teaching hospital must start paying some money.
“I want to be clear, medical services will be available but people must pay, if they want free services let them go to other health centres because this is a teaching facility but to support itself, it must start charging people for the services they get,” he said.
Museveni also urged other Universities to pay more attention to the promotion of science programs, as a way of helping Uganda achieve technological advancement.
On the same ceremony, Museveni installed former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki as Lira University’s first-ever Chancellor during the University’s maiden graduation ceremony.192 graduands received degrees, diplomas, and certificates in various fields of study.
